On the Request Line, I see a model request I want to build. Can I contact the person directly?

The current mechanism is to write back to them through the form provided. Click on the respond icon ( ) next to the request you are interested in, and then type in your message. This response will be e-mailed to the requestor, and also made available to them at their home page. It is up to them to write back to you.

How big can my model be?

The engine used to display your models online is very robust. However, there are things that you can do that will make your model more presentable. Remember, if your model takes too long to load, many potential buyers will look elsewhere. We have set a limit in the translator at 15,000 triangles. We have found this to be reasonable for real-time interactive viewing. If your model is larger than this you will need to build a lower detail version for the viewer. Believe it or not, there are benefits to this. You now have 2 models you can sell and the model will perform better over the web! Remember, this model is a viewing model for the web. In the model description let the potential buyers know that the actual model may have much higher detailed textures and geometry.

How much texture can I use?

Texture is another way that you can make your model perform better in the viewer. Texture consumes large amounts of memory and as such, affects performance. You may have a high performance graphics card and cable modem, but unfortunately, most of those who visit the site will not. It is therefore advisable to reduce the amount of texture memory used in your model. You can reduce texture by reducing the size of the textures or by combining them. Combining them is great but requires re-texturing your model. Reducing the size of the textures is therefore the best route to take. A rule of thumb to follow (even in your modeling) is to keep textures in powers of 2 (64 X 64, 128 X 128, 128 X 256, etc.) You can cover most modeling/rendering package requirements this way. We allow a total of 1024 X 1024 pixel, or 3 megabytes. Add all of your textures together to calculate total size. If your total size is over 1024 X 1024 you will need to reduce some of your textures to accommodate. Choose those that will make the smallest visual impact. As with polygons, remember, this model is a viewing model for the web. In the model description let the potential buyers know that the actual model may have much higher detailed textures and geometry.

I have multiple versions of one model. Can I upload them all?

If you have multiple versions of the same model (different maps, materials, etc) You may want to upload each version. If you are planning on selling them as separate models, you will need to upload each version that you plan to sell. If you have various levels of detail or are selling a models as a group, you may want to explain this in the model details and only upload the beauty models for viewing. When listing levels of detail, be sure to describe the levels of reduction. For example, level 1 - 1500 polys level 2 - 750 polys, etc. Remember, your model will sell better if the buyer knows more about it!

Hey, My model is heading the wrong direction! How can I fix it?

For proper viewing, your model will need to oriented correctly. Our viewer considers the longitudinal axis of the model as the Z axis. Therefore, the Z axis of a car would run from the front to back of the car. The correct way to position your model is ( using a car as an example) at the back of the car, looking forward.

In Wavefront, 3Dstudio, and Mirai, the model needs to be in the same orientation, that is, standing at the back looking forward. Or, X positive is out the right side, Y positive is up and Z positive is out the front bumper, away from you. Using the viewer software that we provide, you may need to experiment a few times to make sure that your models load in the correct orientation.

What formats do you support? Can I only sell those you support?

You may sell models in any format that you wish. Keep in mind, however, that to view the models in 3D over the Internet, you must use the conversion tool provided when you registered. Currently this converts OBJ, FLT, and 3DS file types.
